The San Marcos Farmers Market used to be a Tuesday market. In a summer schedule change that began July 25, the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce moved it to Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. along North City Drive, across from Cal State San Marcos. Most of what North City has added since then fits inside those four hours. A free monthly dance night opens with a performance at 6 p.m. right next to the produce stalls. The brewery social hour ends 90 minutes into the market. The patisserie and the coffee shop close before the first vendor sets up. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that a marketing brochure from the developer, Sea Breeze Properties, presents the district as the city's "new downtown," and right now that downtown's calendar is built around one night of the week.
This Friday, October 30, is the last Friday of the month. Here's how a Friday evening at North City goes, and what the next round of tenants could add on other days.
The switch was the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce's decision. The North County Daily Star reported that the market was moving "from its traditional Tuesday slot" to Friday nights. It stayed in the same place, on North City Drive between Campus Way and Redel Road. Melanie Jamil, the Chamber's event director, told the Daily Star the new night was meant for "residents, neighbors, students, and visitors alike" to "come together to eat, shop, and hang out." The same article said many long-time vendors would stay on, joined by new ones.
The Friday schedule still holds. The market's own site and North City's event listing both show Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. North City lists produce, baked bread, seafood, dairy, nuts, flowers, handcrafted gifts and hot prepared food. The market's vendor page names Golden Heart Farms, R & L Farms, Maldonado Growers and Big Joy Family Bakery among its sellers. For a map pin, the market's directions page gives 251 North City Drive, off Highway 78 and Twin Oaks Valley Road.
The Chamber can be reached at 760-744-1270 for market questions.
The market brought people to North City on Friday nights. On March 27, 2026, North City started giving them a reason to stay past dinnertime. That night launched "Dancing in the Streets," which KPBS described as a free outdoor dance series "taking place alongside its popular weekly Farmers Market." It runs on the last Friday of each month. The dancers of Bella Lux Entertainment lead it and teach a different style each month. The first night was line dancing.
North City's event page lays out the evening like this:
It's free and open to all ages. The last song plays at 8 p.m., when the market closes. Between sets, KPBS noted, guests can walk through the market and stop at the restaurants nearby before coming back to dance.
By the last-Friday rule, the October session falls on October 30, the night before Halloween. North City posts its schedule on its Instagram account, and the event page tells visitors to check there. It's worth a look before you go, both to confirm the date and to see which dance style October brings. The event page lists the location as 250 North City Drive. KPBS's listing used 251. The two buildings face each other along the same street as the market stalls.
North City's business hours fit around the market's four hours. By 3 p.m. the breakfast counters are closed, and an hour later the taps and tasting rooms take over.
| Stop | Address | How it fits a Friday |
|---|---|---|
| Necessity Coffee | 250 North City Drive | Open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, so a morning stop |
| Christophe Rull Patisserie | 251 North City Drive, Suite 121 | Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
| Draft Republic | 255 Redel Road | Social hour Monday to Friday, 4 to 5:30 p.m. |
| Tarantula Hill Brewing Co. | 255 Redel Road | Friday hours listed as 4 to 11 p.m. |
| J. Brix Wines | 250 North City Drive, Suite 10 | Tasting room open Fridays |
| Buona Forchetta | 250 North City Drive, Suite 5 | Lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Sunday |
| Umami Japanese | 251 North City Drive, Suite 122 | Open Tuesday to Sunday |
| Wynston's Ice Cream Co. | 250 North City Drive, Suite 7 | A stop after dinner |
| Mesa Rim North City | 285 Industrial Street | Weekdays until 10 p.m. |
A few details shape the order of the evening. Draft Republic's social hour runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m., so it overlaps the first hour and a half of the market. Buona Forchetta runs its happy hour on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 to 8:45 p.m. Friday isn't one of those days, so on market night the restaurant serves its regular menu. Necessity Coffee held its grand opening on March 7, 2026, three weeks before the first dance night, and it closes at 2 p.m. For a coffee with your Friday shopping, it's a stop to make earlier in the day.
Wynston's has opened before. The shop's own site says it opened in 2019. For the last week of October, its San Marcos page lists a Halloween flavor called "Be My Frankenstein."
North City's Eat + Drink directory has more names for later visits: A Lo Fresco, Maya's Cookies and Milonga Empanadas.
Friday is the district's main night, and Saturday is the only other day with a regular program. North City's arts and events calendar lists Live Music on the Plaza every Saturday. J. Brix Wines also hosts a chef pop-up series with FMI on the first and fourth Saturday of each month. On the 2026 calendar, the next two pop-up Saturdays are November 7 and November 28.
Weekdays look different. The coffee shop and patisserie handle mornings, Draft Republic's social hour covers late afternoons, and Mesa Rim stays open until 10 p.m. Outside of those, the calendar is quiet from Monday through Thursday. That could change with the tenants announced over the summer.
The biggest of them is a grocery store. On August 10, 2026, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that San Marcos is getting its first Trader Joe's, and that it will go in at North City. The Coast News quoted company spokesperson Nakia Rohdes: "We do not yet have a timeline or exact location to share." Until it opens, the nearest Trader Joe's stores are in Vista, Escondido, Oceanside and Encinitas, according to the same Coast News report.
Sea Breeze principal Darren Levitt explained the reasoning in the Coast News article: "Every great neighborhood needs a great grocery store, and Trader Joe's is a natural fit for North City." A grocery store is an errand for any day of the week, and it would give North City a reason for a Tuesday afternoon stop to go with its Friday evenings.
The other announced tenants also lean toward weekday routines. The Coast News listed three of them: Honor Pilates, a padel sport center called Padel N9NE, and Haggo's Organic Taco. In early August, WhatNow reported that Haggo's planned to open at 222 North City Drive, that its plans were "Plan In-Review," and that it expected to open by the end of 2026. That address belongs to the 12-story, 458-unit 222 North City building, which the Coast News said was completed last year. None of these businesses had announced an opening date as of this writing.
North City's homepage also lists a planned Central Park, two acres of open space, with no construction or opening date.
Until those arrive, the Friday schedule is the main draw. Shop the market between 4 and 8, take the free class at 6:15 on the last Friday of the month, and get a table or a pour on North City Drive before or after.
